While the surgical procedure is just one step, rehabilitation and physical therapy (PT)is essential for a successful recovery. Shoulder joint replacement surgery recovery time varies for each patient based on several factors. With my expertise as a home health physical therapist, I will give some suggestions to help you understand the recovery process.

What is TSA?

Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). It is a surgical procedure that involves removing the damaged or diseased parts of the shoulder joint and replacing them with artificial components. The goal of the surgery is to relieve pain and improve the function of the shoulder.

Shoulder replacement is typically recommended for patients with severe shoulder pain and disability as a last resort. Common conditions include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, or a previous shoulder injury. Those who have not responded to non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, pain medication, or cortisone injections may require surgery.

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and may take 1 to 3 hours after the surgery. Physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises are recommended to help the patient regain full range of motion and strength in the shoulder.

After the surgery, it is crucial to participate in physical therapy to aid in the recovery process. A physical therapist will ensure you achieve your options function in less time. In addition, PT can be performed as an inpatient, Home Health, or Outpatient based on your needs.

Inpatient PT:

Inpatient physical therapy is performed in a hospital or rehabilitation center where the patient is admitted as an inpatient. This option is typically recommended for patients who require intensive rehabilitation and close monitoring.

Home Health PT:

Home health physical therapy is performed at your home until you are ready to go to our patient.

Out Patient PT:

Outpatient physical therapy is performed in a clinic where patients visit for scheduled appointments. This option is often preferred for patients who can manage their recovery from home with the support of a caregiver or family member.

Recovery Time:

The length of a full recovery following a shoulder replacement surgery can vary depending on factors such as age and overall health. For example, on average, most patients can expect full recovery to take anywhere from 4 to 6 months, although some patients may experience a faster or slower recovery time.

A physical therapist can help the patient regain range of motion, strength, and function in the shoulder. n. The therapist will also provide guidance and support throughout the recovery process and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan as the patient progresses.
